What's the difference between Null Engineer and NullCXO?
Null Engineer is hands-on engineering (Senior & Principal Engineering Expertise): build, fix, and operate your systems. Published retainers are Lightning and Tempest; scoped Project work is quoted separately. NullCXO is fractional CTO, CIO, and CEO leadership: strategy, teams, vendors, and exec-level decisions, not hands-on delivery. NullCXO has Rain through Lightning packages; Startup Hybrid bundles both; Build Your Own lets you allocate 10–80 combined hours per month across both services. Null Engineer and NullCXO are service brands operated by NullorNaN Systems LLC.
Can I mix engineering and leadership hours?
Yes. Build Your Own splits the month between Null Engineer at $225/hour and NullCXO at $275/hour (no package discounts). Optional Guaranteed Sync Time adds 15% to the monthly subtotal and reserves 10% of purchased hours for collaborative sessions (within the allocation, not added on top). Prebuilt and hybrid packages use their published prices. Turnarounds, transformations, and other heavy executive work are scoped separately, starting at $337.50/hour (not standard NullCXO package pricing).
What is dedicated time?
Standing calendar blocks reserved for you, for a 15% premium on your monthly retainer. Blocks use your purchased hours. They do not add hours or guarantee instant replies, and the premium does not apply to extra hours bought later.
Why is Startup Hybrid cheaper than splitting the same hours yourself?
Hybrid packages use fixed Null Engineer and leadership splits we plan around, so they get an extra 5% off published hybrid pricing. Build Your Own uses the same hourly rates with no package or hybrid discounts, even if the split matches a hybrid package. We bill in 30-minute increments.
What happens if I need additional hours?
Additional hours require client authorization and are subject to available capacity. They are billed separately at the applicable standard service rate in 30-minute increments. Allowances are per engagement quarter (each consecutive three-month period), not per month: Rain 3, Thunder 4, Lightning 6, Tempest 8. Build Your Own uses the cap of the smallest package that covers its combined monthly hours up to 60, and 8 hours/quarter above 60 combined hours/month. Engineering overages bill at $225 USD/hour; executive overages bill at $275 USD/hour. Volume discounts, Dedicated Time premiums, and the Guaranteed Sync Time premium do not apply to additional hours. Turnarounds, transformations, and other heavy executive work are scoped separately, starting at $337.50/hour (not standard NullCXO package pricing).
Can I change plans or tiers?
If your needs change, ask us. We adjust after we agree in writing and confirm availability.

That covers turnarounds, transformations, crisis leadership, major org or architecture bets, AI programs, and other work that needs custom scope. It is not the same as standard NullCXO monthly packages.

How we protect your business
Confidentiality is table stakes. Long partnerships also need trust that what we learn on your engagement will not be used against you.
For 12 to 24 month retainers, we can add a competitive protection commitment in the agreement.
For qualifying engagements, we agree not to launch products or services that directly compete with your defined offerings during the term and for the same length of time after it ends.
- A 12-month retainer provides 12 months of post-engagement protection.
- An 18-month retainer provides 18 months of post-engagement protection.
- A 24-month retainer provides 24 months of post-engagement protection.
You and we define what is in scope in the contract. NullorNaN stays an independent company; the agreement spells out the lines.
